It includes a 226 km\u00b2 land area and a 12.2 km\u00b2 marine zone along the Adriatic Sea. Known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, Neum is a growing tourism destination and home to just over 4,600 residents (2013 census). The town&#8217;s development is mainly concentrated along the narrow coastal strip.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neum faces several environmental and development pressures:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low coverage of protected areas despite valuable natural habitats like the &#8220;maquis&#8221; vegetation on the Klek peninsula<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tourism pressures, including illegal construction and degraded landscapes<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollution risks in the semi-enclosed Neum-Klek Bay, with limited monitoring<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited waste and water infrastructure, including non-waterproof septic tanks and unmanaged stormwater runoff<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underused aquaculture potential and small-scale fisheries facing environmental constraints<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of environmental data and weak institutional frameworks for integrated management<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2>Main objectives<\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAMP B&amp;H aimed to:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish mechanisms for sustainable coastal development<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support B&amp;H\u2019s ratification and implementation of the ICZM Protocol<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote integrated and participatory planning<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build institutional capacities at all governance levels<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raise public awareness about the fragility of coastal ecosystems<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transfer ICZM tools and knowledge to national stakeholders<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2>Key Results<\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project included both horizontal (cross-cutting) and site-specific components. The Coastal Plan is the main deliverable, including proposals or solutions for:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutional mechanisms for ICZM<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protection of marine habitats and natural areas<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring of the marine and coastal environment<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National contingency plan for marine pollution<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotion of sustainable coastal\u2013hinterland tourism<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change adaptation strategy<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAMP B&amp;H helped strengthen cooperation across local, cantonal, federal, and national levels. It laid the groundwork for integrated coastal planning and reinforced Bosnia and Herzegovina\u2019s commitment to international agreements, including the Barcelona Convention, ICZM Protocol, and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
