The area is characterised by intensive industrial activity, rapid urban growth and a highly vulnerable marine environment, where limited water circulation exacerbates pollution impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project aimed to address severe environmental degradation resulting from uncontrolled industrial and urban development, while introducing integrated planning approaches to improve environmental management and guide more sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Key objectives<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building on this context, CAMP Sfax focused on establishing a basis for integrated management of coastal, urban and marine systems, addressing both environmental pressures and development needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was guided by the following key objectives:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce pollution from industrial, urban and agricultural sources affecting the coastal and marine environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve management of water resources and solid and liquid waste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support integrated urban and coastal planning processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthen protection of environmentally sensitive areas and cultural heritage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduce planning tools, data systems and analytical approaches to support decision-making<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Main results<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main results include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support for integrated planning and environmental management, including:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preparation of integrated management plans for Big Sfax and a detailed development plan for Sfax-South<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development of prospective studies with environment\u2013development scenarios supporting a shift towards more controlled and sustainable development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduction of planning frameworks addressing water resources and solid and liquid waste management<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthened knowledge base and environmental assessment, including:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inventory of pollution sources and analysis of industrial, urban and marine pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development of a GIS database supporting integrated analysis and planning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies addressing climate change impacts, protected areas and coastal vulnerabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategic and operational measures, including:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposals for restructuring industrial development and introducing pollution control measures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommendations for improving urban infrastructure, wastewater treatment and waste management systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measures for protection of groundwater resources and rehabilitation of degraded coastal areas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identification of priority actions for phased implementation, including relocation of highly polluting activities and restoration of affected sites<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project established a foundation for long-term environmental management and integrated urban and coastal planning, supported by follow-up actions including feasibility studies and prioritised
