Adriadapt

AdriAdapt is a European cooperation project aimed at strengthening climate resilience in Adriatic coastal and urban areas. It focuses on supporting local and regional authorities in planning and implementing climate change adaptation measures through improved knowledge, tools, and governance approaches.
The project responds to increasing climate risks in the Adriatic region, including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, flooding, heatwaves, and water scarcity. It promotes an integrated approach linking land, coast, and marine systems, while supporting evidence-based decision-making for sustainable development. A key outcome of AdriAdapt is the development of a comprehensive knowledge platform providing climate data, adaptation options, guidance materials, and planning tools tailored to the needs of local authorities.
The platform was tested and validated through pilot actions in selected Italian and Croatian coastal areas, ensuring its practical applicability and transferability to other regions. The platform also featured CREATE project, and serves as a foundation for an expanded Mediterranean resilience platform MedAdapt in the cours of preparation.

Key objectives

AdriAdapt aims to:

  • strengthen local and regional resilience to climate change in coastal and urban areas
  • develop a robust knowledge base for climate adaptation planning
  • harmonise and improve climate data and projections for the Adriatic region
  • support local authorities in designing and implementing adaptation strategies
  • integrate climate adaptation into coastal and urban planning processes
  • promote cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange between Italy and Croatia

Main results

AdriAdapt resilience information platform

  • Development of a trilingual (Italian–Croatian–English) online platform providing climate information, tools, and guidance
  • Integration of climate projections, vulnerability assessments, and adaptation options
  • Repository of best practices, case studies, legal frameworks, and policy guidance

Climate data and projections

  • Production of high-resolution climate projections for the Adriatic region
  • Improved accessibility of climate data for local decision-making
  • Support for evidence-based planning and risk assessment (adriadapt.eu)

Adaptation planning tools

  • Development of an integrated adaptation planning tool (step-by-step methodology)
  • Provision of guidelines, handbooks, and training materials for local authorities
  • Catalogue of more than 40 adaptation options (societal, green, and grey measures)

Pilot actions

  • Testing of tools and methodologies in pilot areas (e.g. Cesena, Cervia, Udine, Šibenik-Knin County, Vodice)
  • Development of local adaptation and resilience plans
  • Validation of the platform and tools in real policy contexts

Capacity building and stakeholder engagement

  • Training and workshops for local authorities and stakeholders
  • Strengthening collaboration between scientists, planners, and decision-makers
  • Promotion of participatory approaches to climate adaptation planning

Knowledge transfer and dissemination

  • Wide dissemination of project outputs through the AdriAdapt platform
  • Transfer of tools and knowledge to other Mediterranean and European regions
  • Contribution to broader climate adaptation and coastal resilience initiatives

Role of PAP/RAC

PAP/RAC played a key role in AdriAdapt by:

  • contributing to the development of the knowledge platform and its content
  • providing expertise on coastal management and climate adaptation
  • supporting the integration of adaptation planning into ICZM principles
  • facilitating knowledge transfer and dissemination of results across the Mediterranean
