EAF/5

EAF/5 supported the protection and sustainable management of marine and coastal areas across the Eastern African region by advancing Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) in practice. Bringing together international organisations and national partners, the project combined on-the-ground implementation with the development of planning tools and strategies, helping countries move from concept to application.

Razdoblje provedbe

1995 – 2000

Partnership:

  • Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
  • Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre

Geographic scope

Mozambique, Comoros, Kenya, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Madagascar, Seychelles

Key objectives

  • strengthen the protection and management of marine and coastal areas
  • advance the application of ICAM approaches
  • build national capacities for integrated coastal planning and management

Main results

Across its two implementation phases, EAF/5 contributed to establishing ICAM as a practical planning approach in the region:

  • ICAM activities were implemented in Mozambique and Comoros, while support was provided to ongoing initiatives in Kenya and Tanzania (Zanzibar)
  • demonstration-oriented work plans were developed for pilot sites in participating countries
  • coastal profiles, management strategies and action plans were prepared, providing a structured basis for long-term coastal planning

Role of PAP/RAC

PAP/RAC played an active role in translating ICAM principles into practice, supporting both the implementation of activities on the ground and the development of planning tools and strategies
