Key objectives
PEGASO aimed to strengthen governance, knowledge and tools supporting ICZM implementation across the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.
In particular, it aimed to:
- assess major environmental and socio-economic pressures affecting coastal and marine areas
- bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and decision-making processes
- support the implementation of the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean
- assess readiness for ICZM implementation in both the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions
- develop and test sustainability tools, including indicators, scenarios and valuation methods
- improve data sharing and access through a spatial data infrastructure
- strengthen capacity building and cooperation across regions
Main results
PEGASO generated a comprehensive governance, knowledge and tools framework supporting ICZM implementation.
The main results include:
- establishment of the ICZM Governance Platform, linking scientists, policy-makers and practitioners
- development and testing of sustainability tools, including indicators, scenarios and valuation approaches
- creation of a Spatial Data Infrastructure enabling improved data sharing across regions
- implementation of case studies testing ICZM tools and approaches at different scales
- strengthened capacity building and knowledge exchange across the Mediterranean and Black Sea
- improved basis for ecosystem-based and integrated coastal and marine management
Role of PAP/RAC
Within the PEGASO project, PAP/RAC led the work on ICZM governance process, playing a central role in bridging science and policy.
In particular, PAP/RAC contributed to the development of the ICZM Governance Platform, including the assessment of governance frameworks, stakeholder needs and institutional readiness for ICZM implementation in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. It also developed methodologies for evaluating ICZM governance and facilitated dialogue between scientific, policy and management communities.
Through these contributions, PAP/RAC established a structured and participatory framework for integrating knowledge into decision-making, supporting the implementation of the ICZM Protocol and promoting ecosystem-based coastal governance across both regions.
