Key objectives
DESTINATIONS aimed to improve the sustainability of tourism in coastal areas by strengthening planning approaches and promoting better integration of environmental and development considerations.
In particular, it aimed to:
- promote sustainable tourism development in Mediterranean coastal areas
- integrate environmental considerations into tourism planning and management
- support more balanced use of coastal resources
- strengthen awareness of the impacts of tourism on coastal ecosystems
- encourage the adoption of sustainable practices and long-term planning approaches
Main results
DESTINATIONS contributed to improving the basis for sustainable tourism planning through targeted analyses and pilot applications.
The main results include:
- development of planning approaches supporting sustainable tourism in coastal areas
- identification of key pressures from tourism activities and their environmental impacts
- promotion of integrated planning concepts linking tourism development and environmental protection
- implementation of pilot actions in selected Mediterranean coastal destinations
- increased awareness and capacity for sustainable tourism management
Role of PAP/RAC
PAP/RAC coordinated the project and contributed to promoting integrated coastal management approaches in the context of tourism development in Algeria, Marocco and Tunisia.
Through its involvement, PAP/RAC supported the application of ICZM principles to tourism planning, helping to frame sustainable tourism as part of broader coastal management processes and strengthening the link between environmental protection and economic development in coastal areas.
