Key objectives
The SHAPE project aimed to support the sustainable development of the Adriatic Region by strengthening the protection and management of marine and coastal environments through an integrated governance approach.
Its objectives were to:
- Promote sustainable human activities in coastal and marine areas and manage conflicts among uses through improved decision-making.
- Strengthen and align ICZM and MSP across the Adriatic Region, ensuring coherence between coastal and maritime planning.
- Improve legal, institutional, and governance frameworks, enhancing coordination and capacity of authorities responsible for coastal and marine management.
- Increase stakeholder engagement, public participation, awareness, and information exchange.
- Facilitate data sharing and knowledge integration, contributing to EMODNET, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and broader European marine initiatives.
- Foster an Adriatic knowledge network to promote synergies and avoid duplication among projects.
Main results
The main results of the project include: an Outline of ICZM in the Adriatic Region; Thematic maps; a Common Methodology for planning in maritime space; Analytical Reports on legal aspects, current policy, and planning tools in the Adriatic Basin; a Common GIS Atlas of the Adriatic Sea; Scientific Reports; Training workshops; and transnational conferences.
SHAPE also promoted the strengthening of synergies and the exchange of results from various projects among a wide network of institutions, through the creation of the Adriatic Forum and the coordination with existing organisations, such as the Adriatic Euroregion, other regions in Europe, and European and International institutions.
